Our Story
Our tree change was not a spur of the moment decision. Valle Laguna is the result of over 10 years of research, planning and building. We had very specific ideas on the type of home we wanted and how we wanted to live in this unique environment; Many of our design decisions are personal, others environmental. Valle Laguna had to be modern in design, energy efficient, and environmentally friendly, but we also wanted it to be perfectly suited to our unique Australian climate.Through the use of steel, polished concrete and glass we achieved not only the look we wanted, but the solar passive design ensures that we energy efficient and environmentally sustainable.
In essence the solar passive design means that we don’t rely on heating or cooling. With their north facing aspect the villas are warmed by the winter sun streaming in through the glass and heating the concrete floors. In summer the extra wide eaves protect the walls from direct sunlight and the ceilings fans and louvered windows funnel cool breezes throughout the villas. High efficiency glass and insulation also aid in keeping the inside temperature relatively consistent throughout the year. Although the villas have air conditioning and wood fireplaces, our guests often comment on how little they are needed. The fireplace is really just for the ambience!
Given our rural setting, being self-sufficient was essential. Our large roof area is utilized to capture every drop of precious rain and to generate power through solar panels. This energy is currently fed back into the grid, but given that we produce more than we use, going “off grid” is a nice option to have.We have absolutely no regrets about making the ‘tree change” and we’re happy to talk with anyone about our experience.
